It’s almost that time again. Time to celebrate LA’s favorite Vegan, Tony Yanow, and his famous Chili Cookoff. On March 2nd, prominent LA Chefs go head to head in a battle to the death and/or glory.
Joining the spicy madness will be returning LA food celeb Randy Clemens whose chef prowess is only rivaled by his skills in the written word. Clemens, author of the Sriracha cookbooks series and freelance writer for LA Mag, West Coaster, and LA Times, among others, is ready to turn on the heat and leave no pepper underutilized.
“I really enjoyed competing in the first Vegan Chili Cook-Off at Tony’s. And while the Hot Knives
and former Tony’s Darts Away chef Randal St. Clair took top honors—people’s choice and judges’ choice, respectively—for their admittedly delicious chilis, let’s be real… I was there to win!
Now, a little over a year later, I’ve got my eye on the prize and I’m back for revenge
. I’ve gone back to the drawing board with my Srirachili NON Carne recipe, and I’ve made it hotter
, and all kinds of tastier
! Be prepared for an explosion of flavor in your mouth… and another explosion the following morning! In the words of Cobra Kai Sensei John Kreese from Karate Kid
: “We do not train to be merciful here. Mercy is for the weak.” – Chef Clemmens
Well there you have it folks, I’m ready to be driven to tears of joy (again) by Randy’s spicy chili.
Joining Clemens will be Chef Erick Simmons of Mohawk Bend, Greg Daniels of Haven Collective, local favorite Chili John’s, and Zel and Ruben Allen of Vegetarians in Paradise.
Guest Judges include Chef Tal Ronnen of Crossroads Kitchen and author of The Conscious Cook, Caroline Pardilla of CarolineonCrack.com, and Cathy Chaplin of GastronomyBlog.com and author of Food Lovers’ Guide to Los Angeles. All star chefs + all star judges = all star event!
For just $10 you’ll get (5) 3oz chili tasters, a voting ballot, and access to one of the most iconic beer bars in LA. As a side note, Tony’s was one of my favorite locales during my Beer Lover’s So California
book tour (now available – Book Release at Golden Road Brewing on March 13, 2014). It’s a fantastic little bar with a local vibe, comprehensive CAL ONLY tap list, and great vegetarian options. If you’re a fan of Golden Road, which is always on tap here, and Mohawk Bend, you should definitely make a point to visit.
I’ll be there and I hope to see you all there. MAY THE BEST CHILI WIN! OH YEAAHH!!!
