Officially opening on Dec 10th, Public School 310 is the second restaurant in the Public School line of gastropubs, the first being Public School 612 in downtown. The name, Public School, is a play off the word PUB, which is short for Public House. The traditional pubs have long since been the town gathering spots for eaters, drinkers, and families alike, and Public School 310 aims to be that for Culver City. With an extensive bar offering cocktails and craft beers, a diverse selection of gastro and gourmet fare, along with a kid’s menu, 310 aims to have something for everyone.
Bierkast was able to get a sneak peak of Public School 310’s offerings during their media event last Thursday, and during our stay we were able to meet with the team behind the restaurant as well as try what they had to offer. What started out as a casual Q and A with the bartender and craft beer expert, Tate Kline, whose resume includes places such as Stone Brewing and Wurstkuche, quickly turned into a formal sit down and beer pairing dinner with owner and CEO Bob Spivak and Executive chef Phil Kastel. Spivak is no stranger to the restaurant industry, having founded well known LA restaurants such as the Daily Grill and The Grill on the Alley.
As mentioned before, Public School 310 is the second restaurant to open under the Public School franchise with a third location slated to open early next year. It’s well lit inside, and as it occupies the same space as the late Fraiche restaurant, it can easily hold a good sized crowd. True to its namesake, the walls are adorned with microscopes, chalk boards, and school ephemera. Its menus resemble traditional composition style notebooks, the cocktail napkins look like notebook paper, and happy hour is appropriately referred to as “Recess.” The theme works well inside and out.
The focus, as Bob said, is “all about the food.” While they have an extensive list of custom cocktails (be sure to try The Shrub – tangerine, rosemary, and Templeton rye), custom fizzy drinks, and craft beer, their main specialty is eats. Exec Chef Phil Kastel has created a completely new menu for Public School 310, so fans of the popular 612 will have something different and unique to look forward to when they visit the west side. If all goes according to plan, Public School will be a new staple in multi-location gastropub dining around LA.
We were able to get an exclusive preview of all the good eats and drinks to come – so please enjoy the food pictures and get excited because Public School 310 in Culver City opens December 10th, 2012 – yesterday!
