‘Tis the season for saison, so John and I celebrated with an at-home happy hour with a wonderfully funky specimen by Logsdon Organic Farmhouse Ales called Seizoen. Logsdon is a fairly new brewery from Hood River, OR which released its first beer in 2011 but has only recently begun distributing to Los Angeles. Don’t let Logsdon’s young age fool you–this brewery comes with quite a resume. Dave Logsdon has over 30 years of experience in the beer industry; he was Full Sail’s co-founder and first brewer, and founder of Wyeast Labs before starting his own brewery.
As soon as I broke the beeswax seal of this golden translucent beer I knew I was in for a treat. To quote John, “On the saison funky scale, Seizeon is most funky!” This beer definitely has elements of a traditional saison while also highlighting an almost lambic’esque funk. It’s earthy with that horse blanket smell that makes you feel like you’ve filled your glass directly from the keg at the barn. Many of the saisons we have available locally, while quite tasty, are missing this characteristic, but Seizeon fully embraces its funkiness and puts it on glorious display.
Since saisons have such bold flavors, these beers can stand up to almost any food pairing. We had a simple spread of pretzels and French-Canadian whole grain Dijon mustard. This was a perfect way to coast into a mid-summer weekend.
