Beachwood BBQ and Brewery has been in the news a lot lately and for good reason. Brewer Julian, has been hard at work crafting quaffable ales for not only the brewpub crowd, but also the beer geeks. Last night, at Library Alehouse, I had my first of his special releases, System of a Stout. It’s an Imperial Stout spiced with Armenian coffee and cardamon, and damn it was good. I’m a sucker for big full bodied beers, and this one really delivered. The balance between the roasted malt, coffee, alcohol, and spices was perfect in my opinion. If it was available in bottles I’m sure it would sell out in a heart beat, but for now the kegs are selling in limited quantities around town.
Last night was a special event at Library Alehouse celebrating the brewery’s 1 year anniversary. Congratulations Julian and crew! Alex P. Davis at Library Alehouse set up some pretty cool pairings for the various Beachwood flights available. We tried the gorgonzola, chocolate, and smoked gouda plate. I’m not a huge fan of gorgonzola, but its creamy funkiness really paired nicely with System of a Stout. If you can get your hands/taste buds on this beer I highly recommend trying this pairing. Well worth it.
If you’ve never been to their brewery in Long Beach, you should get out there. Lots of great house and guest beers on tap, not to mention the massive BBQ menu. Try the meat pies along with a custom tasting flight; you won’t be disappointed.
