We were lucky enough to tag along with the Strand Brewers Club (SBC) to a bottle share event and tour of the newly revived Angel City Brewery. Located in a beautiful historic industrial building in Little Tokyo, the brewery was purchased by Alchemy &Science and looks to turn a new leaf as they open a renovated tasting room later this year. The new team has been busy upgrading equipment and testing new recipes in preparation for a limited commercial launch that is expected within a few weeks.
It was a great evening of tasting homebrew and commercial samples. The guys at SBC brought a tremendous amount of beer and were not shy about sharing with us. We tasted lots of great beers including a German helles, Belgian strong, and a couple of IPAs. We were able to put rival club allegiances aside (we are Pacific Gravity members) and come together over great homebrew. The SBC crew provided some candid feedback on our roggenbier and saison, which we really appreciated.
Another highlight was spending more time with the Angel City Brewery team, including Ashley Todd and their new head brewer, Dieter Foerstner. Dieter hails from AZ and has logged significant time on larger systems as the head brewer at Gordon Biersch. The samples we tried were refreshing takes on some classic styles (not sure we can spill the beans yet) that we know will do well in LA. Looking forward to seeing what else Dieter has up his sleeve.
