Monkish Brewing is the creation of westside resident Henry Nguyen. With the help of his wife Adriana, this couple is building a brewery from the ground up. Like many craft breweries it is nestled in the back of an unassuming business park. It is here in his new 15 BBL (465 gallon) brewhouse that Henry has been quietly producing Belgian ales since operations got up and running in February of this year.
As the name suggests, Monkish is a Belgian-beer-centric brewery. The beers are approachable yet distinctive and still retain traditional Belgian roots. The four varieties currently brewed are true classic Belgian styles (pale, dubbel, saison, and tripel) but with personal twists that make the beers unique, with additions like rose hips, hibiscus, and elderflowers.
There is a tasting room that you can relax in on the weekends or pop into for an after work happy hour. No food is currently served in the tasting room, but I don’t think they mind if you sneak a snack in. There are cool artistic treasures to be found in the tasting room, including a monastery-style antique wooden pew that bears the brewery’s logo.
Monkish Brewing is a welcomed addition to the Los Angeles beer scene and the first Belgian-style-focused brewery in the greater Los Angeles area (sorry The Bruery, you’re too far away to claim that title, but we still love you).
Congratulations to Henry and his family! We look forward to stopping in again soon!
